When Sydney Sweeney made her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live during Season 49, critics and fans alike were eager to see how the Emmy-nominated dramatic heavyweight would handle live comedy.
Having earned universal acclaim for her raw, emotionally devastating turns in HBO’s Euphoria, Mike White’s satire The White Lotus, and Tina Satter’s claustrophobic docudrama Reality, Sweeney had already proven her acting pedigree. But coming off the worldwide theatrical smash of romantic comedy Anyone But You, Studio 8H provided the ultimate testing ground for her comedic timing and self-deprecating wit.
The result was one of the highest-rated and most virally shared episodes of the entire television season. Sweeney leaned fearlessly into meta-humor, media frenzy, and surreal physical gags, proving that her magnetic screen presence translates seamlessly into fast-paced ensemble satire.

In this brilliant deconstruction of the beloved 1997 sports film Air Bud, Sweeney plays the earnest team cheerleader alongside Andrew Dismukes’ passionate coach. As the canine star repeatedly fails to understand basic inbound passes and pees on the hardwood, Sweeney’s deadpan pep talks and desperate sideline cheers escalate the absurdity. The sketch showcased her rare ability to anchor an escalating ensemble bit with genuine earnestness.

- Why It Works: Sweeney playing the straight-faced hotel manager forced to entertain increasingly bizarre crime-scene theories.
Mikey Day’s physical comedy can easily overpower a scene, but Sweeney anchored this sketch with calm, measured authority. As Day’s investigator crawled across lobby furniture and sniffed half-eaten Toblerones, Sweeney’s patient, withering deadpan delivery provided the essential anchor that made the jokes land.
10. Weekend Update: Rom-Com Rumors (Season 49, 2024)
- Co-stars: Colin Jost, Michael Che
- The Premise: Sweeney drops by the Weekend Update desk to address modern cinema trends and the revival of the theatrically released romantic comedy.
- Why It Works: Casual, unscripted banter with Colin Jost and Michael Che that highlighted her natural charm.
